Our home is filled with beautiful objects, vintage furniture, vinyls, and books, which makes for a cosy, interesting vibe. At the same time, the large windows give a feeling of airiness and light to the place, and in summer, you can sit on the terrace and enjoy the long twilight of Norwegian summer nights.
We are a German-Norwegian couple with our little son, and we moved from Berlin (Wedding) to Southern Norway in 2020. Our atrium house from 1964 is one of a number of semi-free-standing row houses in a blind alley, which means that the only traffic on the street is from our immediate neighbors. The house is the last one in the row, and sits on the top of the hill. From the 4 meter-large windows of our living room, you have a view of the Toppdal fjord and the Søm-neigborhood on the opposite hill. We renovated the wooden house when we moved in but were keen to respect the spirit of its original architecture and kept many details.
The house is in a residential neighborhood, but the city centre can be reached quickly by bike (15 minutes), bus (10 minutes), by car (5 min) or on foot (40 minutes). The main road with the bus stop is a 5-minute walk from the house, and busses come frequently.
Kristiansand is a quaint town that has recently made it on the list of the New York Times of the 52 places to visit in 2025. It has two signature buildings that host a theater and opera ("Kilden") and a beautiful collection of Nordic modernist paintings ("Kunstsilo"). In the center, there are various restaurants and bars, and smaller venues for concerts, etc.
Kristiansand is the capital of Sørlandet, an incredibly beautiful coastal region where small towns made of white wooden houses line up along the coast like beads in a necklace. Check out here: https://en.visitsorlandet.com
