We’re Kat and Tobi, the couple behind Swaphouse. The idea came to us during the COVID-19 pandemic when, like many others, we were stuck working from home. Spending months cooped up in our Amsterdam apartment had us dreaming about how amazing it would be to work from anywhere else for a change. The moment travel restrictions eased, we packed our laptops, hopped in the car, and headed to Italy and France to work remotely.
We used Airbnb for our stays, but we quickly ran into challenges. Long chats with hosts to confirm the WiFi was strong enough for Zoom calls didn’t always work out. Many places weren’t set up for remote work, with unreliable internet and no proper workspaces.
On top of that, paying €80–€100 a night just to work all day and only enjoy the home and new location after hours felt too expensive. It just wasn’t sustainable for longer trips and workations.
That’s why we started Swaphouse—a free platform where people like us can swap homes, work remotely, and explore new places without breaking the bank. Whether you’re a digital nomad, a remote worker, or just looking for a change of scenery, Swaphouse makes it easy to combine work and travel, live like a local, and stay productive wherever you go.
