Welcome to our spacious and work-friendly home in historic Haarlem, with Amsterdam, the beach and the dunes all within easy reach! 😊
We recently moved from Amsterdam to Haarlem and are excited to share our new home on Swaphouse. It’s a light and comfortable house in the Kleverpark neighbourhood, just on the edge of Haarlem’s beautiful city centre.
The house is spread over 3 floors, with plenty of space to relax, work, cook and enjoy Haarlem life.
🪴 Garden
When you arrive at our home, you enter through our garden, which immediately gives the house a relaxed and sunny feel. The garden is south-facing, so it gets sun throughout the day, but there is also sun shading for when it gets a little too warm.
We have a comfortable lounge set with pillows that you can use, making it a lovely spot to read, enjoy the afternoon sun or relax outside.
🛋️ Living space
The living room is bright and cosy, with wooden floors and doors that open onto the garden. For relaxed evenings at home, there is a 55-inch OLED screen with Apple TV that you can use, plus a Sonos sound system. All lights are controlled with Philips Hue, so it’s easy to create the right mood at any time of day.
🧑🍳 Kitchen
The kitchen is modern, fully equipped and great if you like to cook at home. It has Miele appliances, a large gas stove, steam oven, dishwasher, fridge/freezer and everything you need for everyday cooking.
There is also a pantry, and you’re welcome to use our appliances, including the Nespresso coffee machine, kettle, blender, toaster and other kitchen basics. Of course, essentials like salt, pepper, olive oil and other everyday items will be there when you arrive for a swap.
From the kitchen, there is also access to a shared green area behind the house where you can sit, which is perfect for an early morning coffee or tea in the sun.
🚪 Rooms
On the first floor, there are two offices and a yoga/gym room. One office has a dedicated workspace and the sofa bed, while the second office has two desks. There is also a spacious bathroom on this floor with a large walk-in shower, toilet and double sink.
The top floor is our favourite part of the house: a calm master bedroom with a large double bed, a bit of a hotel-room feeling, and its own ensuite bathroom. This floor also has a quiet spot to work, plus floor heating and air conditioning, making it a very comfortable space throughout the year.
💻 Working from home
The house works really well for remote work. There are multiple dedicated workspaces, including two fully equipped offices on the first floor and a quiet workspace on the top floor.
Both offices have sit-stand desks and 27” monitors available, making them very comfortable for working from home, which we both do most days. We have a Deco Wi-Fi point on every level of the house, so the Wi-Fi is fast and stable throughout.
🌳 The neighbourhood
We live on the former Ripperda Kazerne terrain, a historic cavalry barracks site that has been transformed into a calm and green residential area. What makes the neighbourhood special is the mix of old and new: several of the original 19th-century barracks buildings have been beautifully renovated, while newer homes were added around them in the same style and atmosphere.
The area feels peaceful and spacious, partly because cars are only allowed in the morning and the neighbourhood becomes car-free from 11:00 onwards. There is still parking nearby though: in consultation, you can use our underground parking spot, which is only a 2-minute walk from the house.
Just around the corner is the Sint Jorisveld, a large green field that used to be part of the old military grounds and now gives the neighbourhood a very open, relaxed feel. The combination of historic buildings, green space and quiet streets makes it a lovely place to come home to after a day in Haarlem, Amsterdam or at the beach.
🚆 Getting around
Everything you need is close by. The Cronjé shopping street is just around the corner, with supermarkets, bakeries, cafés, shops and everything you need for daily life within a 5-minute walk.
Haarlem train and bus station is only a 10-minute walk from the house. From there, it’s another 5–10 minute walk into Haarlem’s beautiful historic centre, with its canals, old streets, restaurants, cafés, terraces, museums and independent shops. It’s one of our favourite things about living here: everything feels close, but the house itself is still in a calm residential pocket.
From the station, you can be at Amsterdam Central Station in around 20 minutes, or at Schiphol Airport in around 30 minutes. It makes the house a great base if you want to enjoy Haarlem, spend time in Amsterdam, or travel around the Netherlands.
🏖️ Beach & nature
One of the best things about Haarlem is how close you are to both the city and nature. The dunes and Bloemendaal beach are only about 20 minutes away by bike. You can use our bikes if you want, or easily rent one yourselves, making it easy to spend the day by the sea, go for a walk in the dunes or have a drink at a beach café after work.
For us, this home offers the best of both worlds: a peaceful and spacious place to stay, with Haarlem’s city life nearby, Amsterdam around the corner, and the beach just a short bike ride away.
We’re really excited to share our new home with fellow Swaphouse members, and we’ll be happy to share our favourite local tips for cafés, restaurants, beach spots and easy day trips. We hope you’ll love Haarlem as much as we do, and we look forward to hosting you here soon!
