How to Build Trust Before a Home Swap with a Simple Video Call

We're often asked: how do I know that the people on Swaphouse I want to swap homes with are legit? How do I know they are who they say they are?

One of my favorite tips is simple: do a video call.

I still remember when Tobi, the Swaphouse founder, and I had our very first video call with complete strangers we wanted to swap homes with. It was nerve-wracking. We were antsy, we were nervous, we didn't know where to sit, how to sit, or even what to say. They were total strangers, after all.

But you know what? We made a connection almost immediately. We realized, oh — they're a couple just like us. They were a little nervous too. They even said, "This is kind of weird, right?" And once we got past that initial awkwardness, it turned into a really enjoyable experience. It was a wonderful call, and such a special moment to connect with people we probably never would have met otherwise.

One thing we did on that first call — and have done ever since — is a little home tour. Just grab your phone or laptop and walk around the house. Show each other where you live and what it looks like in real life. It helps build trust, gives everyone a better feel for the space, and honestly… it makes the swap feel real and exciting.

It's such a simple step, but it makes a huge difference.

If you're about to plan your first swap, take that extra step and schedule a video call. You'll feel more confident, more connected, and much more excited about the adventure ahead.
