Large barndominium in the heart of Texas, quiet and peaceful. Fast wifi and state park 10 minutes away. Dive bars, live music, and one of the best burgers in town is a 2 minute drive away.
10 minutes from Amarillo, our home is a serene getaway from city life and a great place to work from home. Wake up with coffee, and watch the sunrise from our huge front porch. Take a walk around the square in Canyon, TX, a storybook small texas town with plenty of shops, cafe’s, and weekend farmers markets. Then go for a sunset hike in Palo Duro Canyon, a 10 minute drive from the barndominium.
What do I mean by barndominium or “barndo”? Our house is a combination barn-condominium, so I’m not joking when I say it’s spacious! In our “barn” we have a fishing boat, travel camper, and restored 70s blue pickup truck. If you’d like, my father would love to tell you all about the truck or even take you to one of the nearby lakes for some fishing or swimming. The barn also houses the car that would be available to you during your stay. Unfortunately, life in small town Texas does mean a car is a necessity for most activities. But, in my spacious, well-maintained GMC terrain, it doesn’t feel like much of a burden. Additionally, there are ride share services available that can take you anywhere you need to go!
The barndo is also close to Amarillo, Texas. A much bigger city than you’d expect. A city of 200,000 there are plenty of things to do. Check out the sights on historic Route 66, visit a drive-in theater that’s barely changed since the 50s, or peruse the hidden murals in Amarillo’s downtown. There are plenty of art galleries, locally owned cafes and shops, and unique museums to fill your free time during the day. During the night, there are dive bars, live music, and late night driving ranges (where you can rent balls and clubs!) all within a 10 minute drive of the barndo. Visit the new development of Town Square in Amarillo and experience our upcoming food scene at Cask and Cork, bowl a quick game at Cinergy, then cap off the night with a drink at Metropolitan bar. From a dusty Wild West town to the now diverse urban city that is Amarillo, you’ll never get bored.
Speaking of food, if you like tex-mex, the barndo is the place for you. In Amarillo, tex-mex is basically a food group, but it’s not the only food you’ll find, we’ve got barbecue at our gas stations! There’s plenty of American fare, traditional South and Central American food, more Thai places than you could ever aim to visit, or test your spice limits with Ethiopian/Eritrean or Indian food!
The barndo itself is two levels with two bedrooms on each floor. The kitchen is fully stocked, with a double door fridge/freezer, and two ovens. The living room has seating for 4-5, and with a 72” Samsung Smart TV I imagine you’ll need it! There is plenty of WFH space at the kitchen table or in the built in desk upstairs. The light filled downstairs bedroom is unfurnished as of right now (Nov 2024) but does have a comfortable queen-sized air mattress and fully stocked bathroom. The roomy upstairs bedroom has a full bed and another fully stocked bathroom. In the barn there is another stocked half bath. I ensure the house feels cozy and we are always well stocked with extra blankets and throw pillows, but you’ll always feel comfortable with AC and heating.
The land itself is very unique. The barndo is on 15 acres and sits back off the main road, making you feel secluded while still being surrounded by neighbors and plenty of things to do. We have a herd of 6 cows that we use to maintain the main pasture, but they are mostly family pets at this point. On the land we have a barn cat who may come and say hello to you while on the front porch. For prolonged stays, there may be a chance that you’ll have to fill up the cows’ water trough or feed our sweet cat. More likely, my father would make a once daily visit to take care of the animals, but he’d never bother unless you spoke first!
Overall, if you’re looking for a quiet place with a unique experience of small town vibes and a bustling city nearby, this is the place for you!
